Artyom was only two years old as the invasion happened, His parents are unknown to him and most likely dead. He doesn't care about them, neither does he wish to find them as he doesn't know them. His early years inside the factory are spent with a systematic care from caretakers, nurses and occasional indoctrination hours washing his mind aside from humanity's touch. Growing up in such a place taught him from an early age to rely more on brawn than brains. His first insight and recollected memory was at the age of five where another child, much older than him was beaten for treason, it seems they found a book that wasn't meant to be there in the first place. He was witness to the eradication of human history and nature, merely a living flesh in the darkness of a room where - metal hitting on metal and water evaporated from lava was in his atmosphere.
His dormatory is right next to his workplace. In the early hours of his days he was forced into labour to eradicate old world toms, music players, discs and occasionaly perform metallurgy for the closest civilian sectors to build walls and such. As time passed he remembered something, that he was somehow alive and sixteen, the curiosity in his child persona got the best of him so the next shift when he was on work he managed to slip three books from the automated line, one about a gun manual another for the Russian language and lastly a history book regarding mostly Europe. In the evening he was sent off to be indoctrinated by the benefactors propaganda, in the late hours of the night he was studying all three books. His curiousity got the best of him, He was caught by the authorities, a simple man wearing the Civil Protection uniform found him reading them in the night. Artyom overtaken by fear didn't budge as he was tearing up expecting his life to come to an end, though the officer took his mask off, You could see tears coming from his eyes as he fell down to his knees and said in Bulgarian - "Jivey i ne spiray da jiveesh" (Live and don't stop living). Right after that the officer quickly attached his facial plate back and went over to Artyom sending them a knock-out punch. In the morning as he woke up he found out that the books were gone, He stepped out and went to work as if nothing happened. Artyom tried to spy on the officers and recognise who hit him, though he wasn't able to. After a few more years passed Artyom reached the age of eighteen and was released into the civilian populace. His instructions were clear - "Find yourself a job, I'd recommend Civil Protection." said his releasing officer, then he patted Artyom's shoulder and sent him off with a sudden grunt and a push. Artyom wasn not confused, He understood how society worked, He used his brains after all to recognise that this isn't the utopia pictured from his indoctrination, though since he didn't know any better as he grew up in a factory, He was content with what he had. Four years have passed and City Seventeen relocated him to a new city.. Located in Japan, Tokyo - City eight. Artyom arrived confused, scared and lost. Once he stepped out of the train his first sight was the Civil Protection officers that immediately frisked him upon his arrival, then checked his ID, they noticed that he was a young buck and told him "Enlist as soon as you can, kid." Then shoved him off the wall and told him to move along. His only direction was the local slums where he found his first merit point.

Artyom has joined Civil Protection the moment he arrived into the city. It didn't take them long to enlist, a radio here.. a crowbar there and the moment you know it, he's an intention three. Artyom has climbed the ranks with speed, He's made a trusted colleague who's surpassed him temporarily. Artyom- The now Hero-8 officer has been through a lot, three confirmed kills to their name and two intense incursions have definitely hardened the young boy. He's trying to differentiate between authority and empathy for Civilians. He's definitely got the state propaganda, though he's smart enough to understand that maybe there's more to life than the Combine.
