The Union Reserve is the backbone of the Universal Union’s military. Well-trained, cohesive, and disciplined, you are a soldier in the 55th Control Regiment, stationed in the cold Ural mountains, under the watchful eye of CENTCOM, and leadership of Major Jaroslav Yanovich. You have just been called to briefing by your CO; by order of the Department of Defense, you will form a fireteam and infiltrate one of the Resistance’s key underground locations.

Union Reserve 55th Control Regiment
The 55th Control Regiment is a small, 200-soldier unit led by Major Jaroslav Yanovich. They are frequently mobilized for various combat tasks in the Ural area. Their guidebook can be seen here.

The Vagabonds
A group of refugees and freedom fighters originating from various urban complexes in Western Russia. Similarly to many other resistance cells, they perform various sabotage actions on Union facilities and depots to fight the occupation. Recently, they hijacked a high value razor train headed to City 14, and obtained valuable enemy intelligence, which they are now using to plan an attack on a nearby production plant.

Event Information / Q&A

Where will the event take place?

The event will take place on the main 32-slot server, on the map gm_ln_retreat. It will be repurposed for the event team’s needs until the Helix re-release.

When will the event start?
Like with Unforeseen Sanctuary, we need a considerable amount of event characters to be established before we can propose a time and date for the event. When we accumulate the numbers we need, the event date will be announced on this thread, and on the discord server.

How long will the event last for?
This event will be a “one-shot”. It will take place for however long it takes to wrap up the story of the mission, which will likely take an hour or two, after which it will end.

Do I have to apply for a character to participate in the event?
Yes. Only event characters can participate in the event. However, non-participants will be allowed to join the server and spectate the story.

What will happen to the characters in the event factions after the event ends?
Depending on the outcome of the mission, your characters may or may not reappear in other events in the storyline.

How will ranks be determined for the 55th and the Vagabonds?
Ranks will be assigned based on the quality of your application, as well as your character's backstory.

What are the Permanent Kill rules and guidelines for the duration of the event?
The Permanent Kill rules for the event will be based on a strike system. Since a significant portion of the event will be in S2K, losing in such engagements won’t mean instant death of your character. The first time this happens, you’re brought back with wounds. The second time your character dies in S2K, they’re permanently killed. Death in S2RP engagements remains unchanged. However, even if your character dies, you may be brought back on a temporary character, in case either faction calls for reinforcements. Read up on the Lancer PK rules here.

What content do I need for the event?
Everything required to participate in the event can be found in a separate collection, which will be published soon. The Lancer Networks content will still be required.

Why should I write a backstory for a one-off event?
Your characters will likely be used in future events in the storyline, as long as they aren't permanently killed in combat.
The 55th Control Regiment and the Vagabonds will be recurring factions that the Event Team plans to take advantage of more before the Helix re-release.

Character physical description: Averagely built musculature, standing at around 6'1, with a blonde messy appearance lacking any sort of grooming. A German accent.

Character backstory: Leon Haugen, a Germanic-Norwegian was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. His father who immigrated to Germany as to follow his career in political science had all the responsibilities of ensuring Leon became someone important. Following in his father's footsteps, he became a politician graduating from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, University with a bachelors in Political Sciences. While Leon was an intelligent individual, he was a man of the outdoors. He loved to go skiing in the Winter and did freezing hikes with his German Shepard, Holzfäller. Eventually he'd end up as a German diplomat for Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, in St. Petersburg representing a great deal of importance.
When the Cascade occurred, he had been hiking with Holzfäller, so in amount of time it took for the war to be over, Leon hadn't even been able to make it back to civilization. However he did know that the war happened, on the account of alien spaceships and Xen fauna. Leon while not a man of action, he had always wanted to fight for freedom and equality. This mentality led for him to join a group of Vagabonds in their attempt to help humanity regain their freedom.
Leon's natural kind nature and stoic attitude led for him to become a natural leader amongst his constituents, with his great deal of wisdom and down to earth demeanor. While obviously not a military leader, his face brings light to dark faces.

Character physical description: A decently sized guy doning the standard tactical gear of the 55th. They stand in a slim figure and seem to be any average soldier.
Character backstory: A man who was raised in the mountains of Kosovo, when he reached the age required he decided he’d like to make his father proud who was a veteran of the Kosovo Liberation Army by going from the mountains to the capital to sign up for the Kosovo Army known as the Security Forces. He also wanted to make his mother proud who died while giving birth to him. He didn’t sign up on his own he went with his brother as-well who both hade the same goal of enlisting. During boot camp the invasion had happened and he was seperated from the rest of his family. Without much to do he got conscripted into the 55th and wanted to just remain a standard bloke who does the job he’s assigned to and get it done. He never had any goals of ranking up or anything like that but would rather be interested in just remaining as a private.

Character physical description: A Russian male standing at a height of 6'0, he has brown hair styled into a crew cut and a fairly large beard covering his face. He'd be wearing a military uniform with unusual insignia on it. The mans entire left arm is burnt, possibly from acid.

Character backstory: Vaska was born to a working class family living in Akkol, Kazakhstan, despite this both of his parents were actually Russian born and bred. Vaska was 23 years old when the Union arrived, many in his town including him gathered whatever they could and vacated into the wilderness when they saw the chaos caused on television and in the distance, not all of the residents agreed however, those who decided to stay at the town fared better than those who left.

The wilderness was a mixture of terrestrial and Xenian fauna, there was a more substantial presence of Xenian creatures as they swiftly began ravaging the natural fauna. At some point Vaska ended up losing the rest of his group, he was suddenly beset upon by a bullsquid and before he was able to fully acknowledge the situation it spat a noxious fluid at him, Vaska attempted to dive out the way however the fluid impacted his arm causing intense burns, as hard as he tried the pain ended up being too much and he began to pass out.

Vaska later woke up in a cabin, completely at a loss for how he got there, besides him was a table with a military uniform, satchel, pipe and note placed upon it, the note read "Thank me later, or not. I most likely won't be returning. - A Friend." Vaska donned the uniform and satchel, he took the revolver and placed it in a holster which came with the uniform and hung the pipe on his back, stepping out the cabin into the wilderness. He was in a forest and it was dead silent, after a while of roaming he came across a group of Vagabonds and decided to tag along.

Character backstory: Darius was born in Sweden, 10 years before 'the arrival'. He was separated from his parents at a very early age, getting hauled off to one of the child camps that were set up around the planet. Luckily, he had his older brother with him to protect him. Darius and his brother had a very strong bond at a very early age, being almost inseparable. The years seemed like centuries to both of them, until his older brother turned 18. Before he was relocated to the cities, he gave Darius a small necklace to remember him. Darius has held onto that gift ever since, treating it as the greatest treasure in the world. After Darius turned 18, he was relocated to City 45. He fought tooth and nail to survive on his own in this new, strange, and unfamiliar world that he was thrown in, before eventually joining up with the 55th Control Regiment. He needed a purpose in life, and he hoped that he could somehow reunite with his family by climbing up the ranks. Whether that plan works out is up in the air, but until then, he has been keeping his head down and doing as he was told.

Character physical description: An above average heighted man, donning a 55th uniform, speaking with a Scandinavian accent. He has blonde hair and a stubble beard.

Character backstory: Stockholm, Sweden.
Felix and his grandpa were hunting in the woods. His grandpa with a well maintenanced hunting rifle and Felix with a rusty BB gun. They were holding in one of those wooden hunting shacks when Felix spotted a deer. In his reflex he grabbed the hunting rifle of his grandpa, instead of his BB gun. He aimed, shot and killed the deer before realising he didn't grab his own gun to kill it. His grandpa laughed and patted him on the shoulder before handing him a rusty flask with water. Felix questionable looked at his grandpa, where his granda began: "I got this from my grandpa when I killed my first deer, you had to get it from me when you killed your first deer."

Years passed as Felix served in the Swedish Army for a couple of years. He didn't really pay much attention but he was pretty good at handling the gun.

At last, the Combine invasion had begun. Felix was brought to a nearby city in Sweden (luckily) as a whole other life began. He had a rough couple of years, but he managed to survive. Mostly due to his experience within the army. Several people in the city began to notice and on a rare occasion, Felix could hear people talk about him and what was about to come.
One night, Felix was abducted from his bed, blindfolded and thrown into what seemed like an APC. The next thing you know, Felix stood there in a 55th Uniform and still that old, rusty water flask from his grandpa.
What happened on that night of his abduction? No one knows, except Felix himself. Why not go ask him?

Character physical description: A tall-ish looking male in conscript attire, speaking with a southern English accent. His uniform bears the 55th CR insignia.

Character backstory: Christopher was born in North London, and was given up for adoption when he was only a few months old. He lived most of his childhood with his foster parents. His father never paid much attention to him, too occupied with work apparently. His mother however treated him well, kept him out of trouble for the most part. Occasionally they would go to the local park and watch the birds. He joined the Metropolitan Police to work in diplomatic protection when he finished college. It was his dream job, only he knows why. He had a pretty steady few years, guarded number 10, plenty of curious tourists. Then they came.

The war ended so quickly. Chris barely had time to get his equipment on before trying to fight his way through the chaos that was the portal storms and the synths. He was lucky to be alive, unlike most of his colleagues. After the war, he spent the first year or so guarding the provisional city government of 'City 2'. Probably a better fate than trying to maintain order in a broken city. After a while, when Civil Protection was finally instated, he was discharged. Chris quickly adapted to civilian life, perhaps better than the ex-military ones did. He mainly kept to himself. He would get up, get food, walk around, sleep, rinse and repeat. It went ok, for a while.

One day he was stopped by a CP patrol, what he believed to be a randomized search. They brought him into the local nexus building. No one saw him come out. Rumor suggests he was conscripted and sent to Russia. God only knows the truth.

Character physical description: Short, bulky man with a roughly shaven complexion and cauliflower ears. Wears a pristine Military Police uniform with a backpack and basic combat gear.
Character backstory: Growing up in a modest family in Vyborg, Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War, Igor was thrown into the real world early in his life thanks to the Soviet education and economic system. Just as the boy entered into his early teens through tears and long nights of studying, the collapse of the Soviet Socialist Republics forced him and many of his classmates to drop out of school and pursue a career of odd-jobs and occasional crime to support their ever-desperate families.
Tavanovich's life might've continued on this track of hard, manual labor and favours to the mob, but fate intervened. As the 7-hour war came to a close, Igor found himself in a world similar, but highly different than the one he had learned to live in. Thanks to his experience in metal working and back-breaking labour, he was a prime candidate to join the Civil Worker's Union's Production branch.
For years Igor threw himself at his work with fervour, trying to find meaning and fulfillment in guiding depressed citizens in the blasting foundries of City 17; but alas he could not. As a last ditch effort to save himself from splattering to the pavement as many had before him, he enlisted into the Union Reserve at the behest of his local District representative.
It's been a few years now since Tavanovich decided to enlist, and apart from the occasional hiccup, things seem better than before. The short, middle-aged man holds pride in his work, being unusually old for the rank of Lance Corporal but excelling in his duties (at least in his mind). However, now he has begun hearing rumours of insurgents called 'The Vagabonds' prowling nearby, in the cold Ural mountain range. Perhaps change is once more underway..

Character physical description:
A Germanic male, he speaks with a typical german accent, his voice sounds like that of a true smoker. He wears torn camo BDU clothes and heavy body armor. and a wears a face covering over his nose and mouth. He has a dirty looking full beard, and has a medium unmaintained hairstyle. He has a semi-muscular endomorphic body type, has baggy sleepless eyes and has a pack of UU-brand cigarettes sticking from his breast pocket, Likely from his previous city. A few of Dytmers injuries are very clear he appears to have some kind of illness or problem with his lungs. Occasionally he coughs, and has a very raspy sound to his breathing.


Character backstory:

City 8
Dytmer got off the train in city 8 after spending most of his time in city 16. Getting used to a new place was not easy for him, Dytmer felt alone in an odd, culturally different city. Being one of the few Germans there. Dytmer initially only took a special interest in other Germans, as he was less skeptical of them and more likely to be friends with them. Dytmer also tried building report with other smokers. Hoping it’ll help him continue his own habit of doing so. Dytmer is also keen on befriending those of other cultures, but only does so if there's a benefit in it for himself. Dytmer was quick to cut ties with people he had a bad impression of.

Dytmer came off the train from City 16, rather poor. He didn't find the rations enough, and couldn't rely on others for anything. This prompted Dytmer to start running scams on fellow citizens, doing it a way that wouldn’t cause conflict, and it never would run into conflict due to his victims choices. Mainly he preyed on the elderly, people weaker than himself, new arrivals, or cultures that were in the minority in the region. This way he’d avoid consequence. If it did occur, he was prepared multiple ways however, doing anything to get out of the situation. It didn’t occur often though.

He had joined the People’s voice for a while, hoping for change, but the faction didn’t last long, and Dytmer left it behind him. Not soon after, the earthquake happened in city 8, prompting him to hide in a steel closet until the calamity was over. He survived the earthquake, but got stuck for a while. With much effort, Dytmer managed to get free at the last moment however, and ran as fast as he could to the train station, and managed to board the train, seconds before it departed.



Terminal 6
Dytmers time in Terminal 6 was hell on earth. After getting an initial idea of how it went in the city, going through the shower process and meeting the Transitional authority, he was convinced that he didn’t want to be here. He managed to keep his suitcase, in which he smuggled a load of potatoes from a farming location the People’s voice had, and left nothing behind of. He had spent the week in Terminal 6, He didn’t set much foot outside after choosing to stay hidden in an old sewage system. His time was very boring, but he kept his strength up by living off of that suitcase.

Post-T6
Dytmer realized that the situation of the city wasn't looking too good, a lot of people had gotten wounded and scarred from the earthquake, Terminal 6, and the cleaning the city up afterwards. Dytmer decided to abuse the situation. He insisted on becoming a CMU worker, and was allowed to join without fee due to the desperate demand of medical staff. He spent most of the time he was working in the clinic. He'd treat people that occasionally came in with flesh wound, but shrugged off patients with symptoms, telling them that they were experiencing those issues due to malnourishment. Dytmer kept raking in salary for a while, tried to feed himself as well as he could.

He liked getting praised for his ''Great work.'' even though he didn't truly care about being a doctor, he decided his Civic points should stay they way they were, but people were often getting in his way, trying to rat on things he had did in the past. When dytmer realized who was at threat of doing so, he blackmailed them, taking the statement he was likely to get ratted out with, and reversing it on them. Due to his status he figured it'd go well. And it did for a long time.

Dissapearance
Dytmer dissappeared from the city without trace before winter arrived. No one is sure where he currently is, or if he's still alive a few speculate he was either murdered or imprisoned. This is not confirmed however, a body had never been found. There's the possibility of a transfer to another city, but something like that would've been more obvious. It could be that he escaped by either himself or with from the city to find something outside, but that would have been a challenging thing to do.

In the end his eventual lack of friends has just led to a mysterious dissapearance that can only be left up to speculation by those who knew him.
But due to his well-disguised, but rather extreme sociopathy he did pull through this life pretty well, and something tells me he might just be fine.
