Hello folks, this is the community Underrail thread, it's a game most of you probably know nothing about, so I'll do my best to give you the gist of it here.

If you want more information I'll leave you the link of SSeth's video on the game, he did a great job.

I'm going to be playing through the base game and expedition expansion on my own time, might update and send screenshots of things I found interesting down below. Some of the things you'll see here might be spoiler heavy, so I'll do my best to put the proper tags and disclaimers on anything I don't want you to see, and certain aspects I'll leave completely unmentioned. The game is fucking huge, and if you decide to play it you'll find a lot of interesting shit which I won't deprave you the joy of finding.

CHARACTER CREATION

The game has an interesting way of dealing with XP, there are two systems available to you:

Oddity XP - Which gives you experience points for finding oddity items, it benefits stealthier characters not focused on brute combat, as this way you'll gain levels without having to kill everything in your path.
Classic XP - Which is your classic RPG XP system, you get points for murder, good for characters who will be committing a lot of it. Use this if you're going head on against enemies... In other words use it for your first time because that's pretty much all you'll be doing.

This time I'll be playing on classic XP as my character will be running at the enemy head first.

After choosing your XP type and difficulty you'll be confronted by this screen.

It is, as you may have guessed, your character creation screen. Here you can choose your name, portrait, ability and skill points along with feats, which are essentially perks. I'll not bore you the details of each skill, as they're all self explanatory.

For this introduction I'll make my example character "Frank". He's designed as a close quarters sort of guy with lots of health to burn through, but little to no abilities in psionics (essentially cave wizardry).

After that you go through some introduction and tutorials, I skipped this as I've already gone through those, however you should probably play through them to get some background information and understand the combat system.

GAMEPLAY

You spawn in your room with pretty much nothing to your name, you should check your mail and grab a few items from the containers in your room before continuing.

You're in South Gate Station, one of the more civilized groups left in Southern Underrail. You've been admitted as a citizen, which is no easy task, as SGS only takes the best they can. It's your job (for now at least) to run around and complete tasks for the station to secure its future in the unforgiving world of Southern Underrail.

You'll be called to the office of Hadrian Tanner, one of the leaders of the station. There he'll give your first task: you are to clear some outposts in vicinity to the station and restart the generators in them. Before you can do this however, you'll need to go get armed and do some optional exploration of the station for some nice loot you can use later. I personally always take the stuff in my room and some meat from the kitchen, as it can be used for a quick quest later on.

There are a lot of potential quests you can get started just by exploring and talking to the people in the station (Jack Quicksilver and Pasquale to name a few).

After you've got everything sorted out it's time to head out, go to the lowest level, talk to the guard at the gates to get out. You should also go to the docks which are behind the chain link fence in the same room. You can steal some stuff from the warehouse if you're careful, especially from the shelf on the far right.

When you've got your stuff and access to the outside, you're good to go. Talk to the gate guard once more, ask him to open the gate and step into the great unknown. After leaving you enter a crossroads, there you can talk to Old Jonas, a Southgate Station scavenger (Who can give you an easy quest if you ask him about the outposts).

After your optional chat with Jonas you should head North from the crossroads, from here on out you should tread carefully, as Rathounds inhabit the area. While they're not too tough, they're hard to deal with, especially at level 1 and straight out of the station. Don't let them surround you, as if they do they'll use the 'pack hunting' ability, dealing massive damage. If you have flares, now is a good time to equip them into your quick-use menu, as they'll save your life if you're surrounded.

Remember, by holding down TAB (by default) you will turn on highlight mode, this way if there are enemies which you cannot see in normal view because of the perspective the game is set in, you can see their outlines and target them. This is a godsend, as sometimes trying to target the small area which registers as the actual enemy was tedious.

If you picked the 'Snooping' feat, or have high enough perception, you'll find a lot of trapdoors which lead to the other areas. This way you'll not have to waste lockpicks to get in.

After you've found the generator just turn that bitch on and go flick the switches. After that just go to talk to Tanner (And old Jonas if you figured out that quest) for your sweet loot, money and XP. After that you'll get your next mission, just follow your journal and the directions you are given.

After the second quest the game really opens up, I won't say exactly how, but you get to do a lot and meet a lot of interesting characters on your journey.

Also, the side quests are pretty cool, and there's a lot to explore if you don't want to advance the main plot just yet.

Combat

In Underrail combat is turn based. It starts when one side spots the other, this is when initiative is rolled. Initiative has to do with a lot of factors, including who spotted who first, attributes and other factors. The side with the higher initiative starts.

You're given a set amount of movement and action points per turn. Movement points, as you might have guessed, are for moving around the field. Action points are for moving AND doing other actions, like shooting, punching, opening and closing doors, casting spells, reloading, healing and looting things during combat. You need to keep an eye on your action points, and you shouldn't waste them.

Once initiative has been chosen the side with a higher initiative starts with a set amount of action points depending on their character or the type of creature they are. The first round of actions is usually spent getting into better position to attack your enemy, except for certain characters like psionic based ones, who can never miss a target. After that it's all about shooting, punching, stabbing and grenading the other party to death as fast as possible.

The combat system is slower and allows you to think your actions through unlike some more fast paced games which require split second choices to be made.

GET THE GAME IF YOU WANT TO

It's honestly a good game and I myself enjoyed it and still enjoy it to no end, I'm not a shill, I just really like it. If you want the steam link it's right here: BASE GAME, DLC + GAME. You can also buy it on GOG if you're that kind of guy.

Ask questions, post screenshots if you have it or got it, the forums are dead so I don't really care. Bye.
