Half-Life 2 Roleplay

Exordium

A stone memorial stands in the now desolate Tawau district.

Like many of its kind, it commemorates those who died in the brief, needless conflict between humanity and the transdimensional empire that became colloquially known as the Combine.

“MOURNING THE DECEASED
I regret that some of our friends have died so young.
It is very sad.
I just hope that you enjoy the afterlife
And your holy light over radiates to us the living, peaceful and happy forever.”

Unofficial estimates place the casualties of the 7 Hour War at over 2,500,000,000 - making it the deadliest war in human history. In spite of the death toll, the surrender of most military powers had been accepted on the same day that fighting commenced.

Remaining human archives place the date of the 7 Hour War on the 26th of May, 2001. Although official documents on the Black Mesa Incident were never declassified before the Combine Occupation, people were gradually made aware that it had occurred roughly 10 days before the war. It is a common presumption that the two events are intrinsically linked.

Overshadowing even the two global wars of the previous decade, the administrations of Earth who collaborated begun using a new calendar to denote the time that has passed since such a monumental event for humanity:

Before Extrication*
DD/MM/2000 / 1 BE
After Extrication
DD/MM/2002 / 1 AE

Currently, the year is 2020 - now 19 AE. The Earth has been under the subjugation of the Combine for almost two decades.

*extrication: To be extricated; To be freed from a constraint or difficulty.

The first stages of Combine occupation were immediately blemished by policies of extreme urbanization. Cities were expanded, fortified and filled with residents from the increasingly dangerous rural areas.

Overcrowding and famine ravaged the post-war population, with many succumbing in the years preceding the expansion of the urban centers.

Infants, children and teenagers were routinely split from their families and delivered to work camps or other combine facilities. Some would return periodically upon reaching adult age. However, nobody new arrived in the cities this year.

With the suppression field active across the globe, it seems the days of humanity are finally numbered.

Evolution

Many hoped that the remnants of the world’s military forces would be able to regroup and throw off the shackles of Combine rule. Others thought that eventually, the occupation would have to end and the civilian rule would be restored. This was not the case.

Eventually, the majority of what remains of Earth’s population came to accept this sordid state of affairs. The citizens of the Universal Union’s regime on Earth live despondently; they carry out their daily duties without much quarrel.

With increasing compliance, the mysterious masters of the Combine Empire push for further integration of humanity.

Not everyone, however, is content to live this way. Resistance against the status quo - both within and external - is on the rise. Many powerful and mystifying figures watch the Earth with keen interest.

After all, no empire lasts forever.
